Hurricanes Corner

The Carolina Hurricanes are a professional hockey team in the National Hockey League (the NHL). The Carolina Hurricanes play in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference with four other teams: the Florida Panthers, the Washington Capitals, the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Atlanta Thrashers.  Hurricanes tickets will be a hot item during the 2014-2015 NHL hockey schedule.

Carolina Hurricanes 2014-2015 Outlook

An organization that hasn’t made the playoffs since 2009 seems to be entering a transition phase, and there’s little reason to think they’ll be any good this year. The roster was already thin on talent before losing Jordan Staal, who fractured his fibula during a preseason game and could miss four months. Eric Staal can still be dominant, but he turns 30 next month and hasn’t topped 80 points since 2008. You never know what you’re going to get from Alex Semin, and Jeff Skinner has yet to top the point-per-game average he put up as an 18-year-old in 2010-11.

There’s some talent here, but it’s not hard to imagine the whole thing going south in a hurry. And if it does, will Francis shift into full-fledged rebuild mode and start moving veterans?

History

The Carolina Hurricanes franchise was originally founded in 1972 in Boston, Massachusetts as part of the World Hockey Association (WHA).  After 2 disappointing years in Boston where attendance was poor due to the loyalty of most fans to the NHL’s Boston Bruins, the New England Whalers (as the team was then known) moved to Hartford, Connecticut.  The franchise was one of the more successful members of the WHA, and in 1979, the NHL awarded expansion franchises to the New England Whalers and 3 other WHA teams – the Edmonton Oilers, the Winnipeg Jets and the Quebec Nordiques.  The franchise became known as the Hartford Whalers once it joined the ranks of the NHL.  As an NHL team, the Hartford Whalers achieved very little success.  The Hartford Whalers achieved only 3 winning seasons and never advanced further than the 2nd round of the NHL playoffs.  When the city of Hartford could not sufficiently fund a suitable new arena for the franchise in 1997, Owner Peter Karmanos moved the team to the thriving Research Triangle in Raleigh, North Carolina and the team became known as the Carolina Hurricanes.  The Carolina Hurricanes played their first 2 seasons in Greensboro, North Carolina while a new arena was being built.  The Carolina Hurricanes enjoyed instant success in North Carolina, qualifying for post-season play in 3 of the first 5 years in Raleigh.  The Carolina Hurricanes even advanced to the franchise’s first ever Stanly Cup Finals in 2002, losing to the Detroit Red Wings in 5 games.  After the 2004-2005 NHL lockout, the Carolina Hurricanes were prime for a comeback, and the team responded with 52 wins and a franchise-record 112 points.  During the 2005-2006 NHL playoffs, the Carolina Hurricanes stormed past the Montreal Canadiens and New Jersey Devils in the 1st 2 rounds of the playoffs to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals against the Buffalo Sabres.  In a hotly contested 7 game series, the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Sabres to advance to the franchise’s 2nd Stanley Cup in a 5-year span.  The hard work paid off, as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Edmonton Oilers in a memorable 7-game series, to reward the Hurricane faithful with the first and only Stanley Cup in franchise history.

The Carolina Hurricanes have retired the following players’ numbers: Steve Chiasson’s #3 (retired unofficially in 1999); Ron Francis’ #10 (retired on January 28, 2006); and Wayne Gretzky’s #99 (retired league-wide by the NHL on February 6, 2000).
