Britney Spears is an American pop singer, songwriter and dancer who is best known for her high energy pop and dance performances.  Britney Spears’ name has become an inherent part of pop culture.  Spears is also a movie actress, an author and a reality television star.  Britney’s music has appeared on the Jive record label.

Background

Britney Spears was born Britney Jean Spears on December 2, 1981 in Kentwood, Louisiana.  She was raised as a Southern Baptist by her father, James Parnell Spears, and her mother, Lynne Irene Bridges.  Britney has an older brother, Bryan, and a younger sister, Jamie-Lynn.  Before Britney became a world-famous singer, she was a star gymnast.  She auditioned for The Disney Channel’s program “The New Mickey Mouse Club” at the young age of eight, but was too young to earn a spot on the show.  However, she was introduced to an agent and spent the next few summers at NYC’s Professional Performing Arts School.  She also appeared in a number of off-Broadway productions and the popular television show, “Star Search.”

After Britney’s second time auditioning for “The New Mickey Mouse Club,” she earned a spot on the show.  She performed alongside Joshua Chasez, Keri Russell, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Ryan Gosling.  Following success on “The New Mickey Mouse Club,” Britney received her first recording contract with Jive records and earned a spot opening for the band NSync.

Britney’s first album, Baby One More Time, was an instant success and a chart topper.  Her second album, Oops!... I Did It Again, enjoyed similar success.  Her subsequent albums followed suit as Britney became a mega star.

Besides her successful singing career, Britney is well known for a number of her other endeavors.  Britney is well known for appearing in promotional advertisements for Pepsi in 2001.  She gained much publicity by appearing with Madonna, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott at the 2003 MTV Video Music Award at which she and Madonna kissed.  Britney has appeared as an actress in the following Hollywood films:  “Longshot,” “Austin Powers in Goldmember” and “Crossroads.”  Spears has also published a number of books.  She and Federline appeared in a reality television show called “Britney and Kevin:  Chaotic.”  Britney also released perfume fragrances called “Curious” and “Fantasy.”

Britney Spears was well known for her highly publicized relationship with Justin Timberlake and for their ensuing highly publicized breakup.  In 2003, Spears married Jason Allen Alexander, her childhood friend, in Las Vegas.  The marriage lasted only a few days before being annulled.  Spears is now married to dancer and rap artist Kevin Federline.  Together, the couple has two sons, Sean Preston and Sutton Pierce.
