2008 Kansas City Royals Outlook
Last season (2007) marked the first season in three years that the Kansas City Royals did not lose 100 games. Winning 69 games and losing 93 may not seem fantastic on its face, but baseball is a game of trends and inches, and the Royals like what they see happening as the 2008 Royals campaign gets under way. Progress often has such humble beginnings . . . and the Kansas City Royals are looking to continue this trend in 2008.
The Royals are again turning to young players to assist in turning around the team's fortunes. The Royals picked up RHP Yasuhiko Yabuta, outfielder Jose Guillen, infielder Alberto Callaspo, left handed pitcher Ron Mahay, catcher Miguel Olivo and RHP Hideo Nomo. Some think the Guillen pick-up was not smart -- three years and $36 million for a guy with a history of altercations and infractions.
The keys to winning in 2008 involve improving a lackluster lineup -- Mark Teahen and David DeJesus need to locate their stroke. Jose Guillen will also have to prove his value, both offensively and as a team leader. In 2007 only one player hit above .300 (Joey Gathright at .307) -- a figure that must change in 2008 for the Royals to get close to a .500 winning percentage.
