New GM Neal Huntington needs what all teams need -- solid pitching and good hitting. But he only has $50 million to spend to get the players. The Pirates just can't compete for top talent with this limited budget. This is the baseball equivalent of Rachel Ray's $15 per day travel -- it won't work.
Nothing contributes to losing more than . . .losing. In 2008 the Pirates need to avoid the double-digit losing streaks that have killed them in recent seasons. On the offensive side, Jason Bay and Xavier Nady need to step up and produce and stay healthy. On the mound, the Pirates will need surprises from young players.
