The Charlotte Bobcats are a professional basketball team in the National Basketball Association (the NBA).  The Charlotte Bobcats play in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference with four other teams: the Miami Heat, the Orlando Magic, the Washington Wizards and the Atlanta Hawks.

History

The Charlotte Bobcats joined the ranks of the NBA in 2004 as an expansion team.  Charlotte’s previous expansion team, the current New Orleans Hornets, played in Charlotte from 1988 through 2002.  When the Charlotte Hornets announced its decision to re-locate to New Orleans, the city of Charlotte and the NBA quickly formulated a plan to host another team in Charlotte for the 2004-2005 season.  Black Entertainment Television Founder Robert L. Johnson’s ownership group won the bid for the city’s team, and the group added Michael Jordan as its 2nd largest owner just 2 years later.

In the 2004 expansion draft, the Charlotte Bobcats acquired Gerald Wallace and Predrag Drobnjak.  The Charlotte Bobcats immediately traded Drobnjak to the Los Angeles Clippers for the 2nd pick in the 2004 NBA Draft.  The Charlotte Bobcats used that 2nd pick to select center Emeka Okafor who went on to win the NBA Rookie of the Year Award following the 2004-2005 season.  Over the course of the next few years, the Charlotte Bobcats continued to acquire talented young players through the draft and via trade:  Raymond Felton and Sean May in 2005; Adam Morrison and Derek Anderson in 2006; and Jeff McInnis in 2007.  Original head coach Bernie Bickerstaff was also replaced with Sam Vincent following the 2007 season.  The 33 games won by the Charlotte Bobcats during the 2006-2007 season was the most games won in franchise history.  The Charlotte Bobcats have never finished with a winning record and they have never advanced to the NBA playoffs.

Although the Charlotte Bobcats have not yet retired any players’ numbers during its short existence, the following talented players have graced the hardwood for the Charlotte Bobcats:  guard Raymond Felton – the Charlotte Bobcats leader in assists per game; guard Brevin Knight – the franchise’s first team captain (along with veteran Steve Smith) who also recorded the team’s first assist; center Emeka Okafor – the Charlotte Bobcats leader in rebounds and blocks per game, who also recorded the franchise’s first ever defensive rebound and first ever offensive rebound; and forward Gerald Wallace – the Charlotte Bobcats scoring leader who scored a franchise-record 41 points on March 28, 2006.

Bobcats TV/Radio

All Charlotte Bobcats basketball games can be seen on the News 14 Carolina television networks in the greater North Carolina area.  WMYT-TV (MyNetworkTV) will also broadcast certain games during the season.  NBC, ESPN and TNT may also televise Charlotte Bobcats games based on the popularity of the game.  Tune into Mix 106.1 WNMX on your FM dial to catch each Charlotte Bobcats basketball game on the radio.

Bobcats 2007-2008 Outlook

The Charlotte Bobcats have realistic hopes for the 2007-8 NBA season.  The Charlotte Bobcats expect solid production from Raymond Felton and Matt Carroll, forwards Gerald Wallace, Adam Morrison and Sean May, and center Emeka Okafor. The Charlotte Bobcats will look to veterans Jeff McInnis, Othella Harrington, Nazr Mohammed and Derek Anderson to provide the necessary experience to withstand the grueling 82-game NBA season.  The Charlotte Bobcats are a very young team (8 players have 4 years or less of NBA experience), so the team will need to work on consistency and team-oriented basketball in order to vie for an Eastern Conference playoff spot.  If the Charlotte Bobcats can play spirited basketball all season long, they have sufficient talent to advance to the playoffs and make some serious headway in the near future.
Charlotte Bobcats Arena
The Charlotte Bobcats play their home games at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena.  The Charlotte Bobcats Arena opened in 2005.  In addition to hosting Charlotte Bobcats NBA home games, the Charlotte Bobcats Arena also hosts all of the home minor-league hockey games for the Charlotte Checkers of the East Coast Hockey League.  The Charlotte Bobcats Arena holds a seating capacity of 19,026 devoted die-hard Charlotte Bobcats fans.  The Charlotte Bobcats Arena has also played host to numerous memorable and historic concerts and special events during its short history.
