Nets Corner
The New Jersey Nets are a professional basketball team in the National Basketball Association (the NBA). The New Jersey Nets play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference with four other teams: the Boston Celtics, the New York Knicks, the Toronto Raptors and the Philadelphia 76ers.
History
The New Jersey Nets franchise was created in 1967 as part of the American basketball Association (the “ABA”). Initially, the team played in New Jersey and was originally known as the New Jersey Americans. From 1968 through 1976, the franchise played on Long Island in New York State and the team was known as the New York Nets. The Nets advanced to the playoffs in all but one year during its tenure in the ABA. The Nets were the ABA Champions in 1974 and 1976.
In the summer of 1976, the ABA and NBA merged. Four teams from the ABA, the Nets, the Denver Nuggets, the Indiana Pacers and the San Antonio Spurs, joined the ranks of the NBA. While the Nets remained in New York State during its first year in the NBA, the Nets moved back to New Jersey for good starting with the 1977-1978 season. The Nets played 4 seasons in the Rutgers Athletic Center while awaiting the completion of the Brendan Byrne Arena within the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
From 1976 through 2001, the Nets advanced to the NBA playoffs several times, but they could only advance past the 1st round only once. During the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 seasons, the Nets advanced to the NBA Finals only to get swept by the Los Angeles Lakers and lose to the San Antonio Spurs 4-2. The 2000 Nets teams have been led by crafty guard Jason Kidd as well as superstar scorer Vince Carter.
The New Jersey Nets have retired the following numbers during its franchise’s history: Drazen Petrovic’s #3 in November 1994; Wendell Ladner’s #4 in September 1975; John Williamson’s #23 in December 1991; Bill Melchionni’s #25 in September 1976; Julius Erving’s #32 in April 1987; and Buck Williams’ #52 in April 1999.
Nets TV/Radio
All New Jersey Nets basketball games can be seen on the Yes Network. NBC, ESPN and TNT may also televise New Jersey Nets games based on the popularity of the game. Tune into 660 WFAN on your AM dial to catch each New Jersey Nets basketball game on the radio.
Nets 2007-2008 Outlook
The New Jersey Nets have high hopes for the 2007-8 NBA season. The New Jersey Nets have advanced to the playoffs each of the last 6 seasons, so anything short of a playoff berth will surely be considered a disappointment for the New Jersey Nets. The Nets are led by veteran guards Jason Kidd and Vince Carter, veteran forward Richard Jefferson and veteran center Jason Collins. Rookie players Josh Boone and Marcus Williams from the University of Connecticut Huskies should also make significant contributions to the team. If the Nets can continue to play spirited, team-oriented basketball all season long, they should be a lock for a 7th consecutive playoff appearance.

Izod Center
The New Jersey Nets play their home games at the Izod Center. The Izod Center was formerly known as the Brendan Byrne Arena and most recently, as the Continental Arena. The Izod Center is a multi-purpose indoor arena located within the Meadowlands Sports Complex. In addition to hosting New Jersey Nets basketball games, the Izod Center used to host the home professional hockey games for the New Jersey Devils of the NHL and the home college basketball games for the Seton Hall University Pirates. However, starting with the 2007-2008 seasons, the New Jersey Devils and Seton Hall Pirates now play their homes games at the newly constructed Prudential Center in heart of downtown Newark, New Jersey. The Izod Center holds a capacity of 20,049 devoted die-hard New Jersey Nets fans. The Izod Center continues to host various musical concerts throughout the year.
