Packers 2009-2010 Outlook
Things went from bad to worse for the Packers during the off-season leading into the 2008-2009 NFL season. The Packers had just fallen short of a Super Bowl berth when the New York Giants defeated them 23-20 in overtime in the NFC Championship Game. The Aaron Rogers was set to begin until long-time quarterback Brett favre decided that he still wanted to play for the Packers in July. Favre even showed up at Packers training camp forcing the Packers hands to unload him to the New York Jets right before the season started. The 2008-2009 NFL season began in turnoil for the Pakcers and continued that way for much of the year. The Packers finished 6-10, losing 7 of their last 9 games. Not good.
But Packer Nation is not all that down on their beloved Packers. And Pakcers tickets will surely be hard to come by during the 2009-2010 NFL season. Although the record didn't show it, Aaron Rogers had a solid 1st year as an NFL quarterback and has learned the system backwards and forwards - 93.8 passer rating, 63.6% completion percentage (341 for 536), with 28 TD's and only 13 interceptions. Rodgers showed that he has the poise and talent to lead the team's offense and he has the full confidence of all his teammates. The Packers will look to establish a more consistent running game behind Ryan Grant - 1,203 rushing yards and 4 TD's on 312 carries. Brandon Jackson and DeShawn Wynn will also serve as meaningful back-up running backs during the long NFL schedule. And Rogers will have plenty of opportunities to coordinate with one of the best receiving corps in the game - Donald Driver, Greg Jennings and James Jones are 3 talented wide receivers, while Donald Lee is one of the best tight ends in the game today. As the Packers offense continues to grow and gel, opposing teams will have a tough time defending against the Packers balanced attack.
The Green Bay Packers defensive unit showed significant signs of improvement during the 2007-8 NFL campaign. Veteran defensive backs Charles Woodson and Al Harris are proven stars in the secondary, while Nick Collins has emerged as one of the best safeties in the game. Linebackers Nick Barnett and A.J. Hawk have formed a great tandem in the middle of the field for the Packers. Ryan Pickett, Aaron Kampman and Mike Montgomery are continuing to grow together to form one of the most formidable defensive lines in the NFL. If the Green Bay Packers defensive unit can continue to improve from the 2008-2009 performance, the Green Bay Packers could be a surprise force to reckon with during the 2009-2010 NFL schedule. The Green Bay Packers were founded in 1919 and they joined the NFL 2 years later in 1921. The Green Bay Packers hold the record for the most championships in NFL history – 12. Curly Lambeau originally founded the team in 1919 when his employer, the Indian Packing Company, sponsored the team. While the team struggled financially in its early years, the Green Bay Packers still won 6 NFL Championships from 1929 through 1944. The Green Bay Packers gained legendary recognition during the Vince Lombardi era in the 1960’s. Head Coach Vince Lombardi took over a last-place team and instilled confidence and discipline in his players to develop one of the most dominating teams in NFL history. During a 7-year span in the 1960’s, the Green Bay Packers won 5 NFL Championships and the first 2 AFL-NFL Super Bowls played in 1966 and 1967. Several offensive stars led Vince Lombardi’s high-powered offense – Bart Starr, Paul Hornung, Jim Taylor, Carroll Dale and Jerry Kramer. On the defensive side of the football, legendary players like Willie Wood, Ray Nitschke, Dave Robinson and Herb Adderley dominated opposing teams’ offenses year after year. In 1960, the Green bay Packers lost their first NFL Championship game under Head Coach Vince Lombardi (a 17-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). But following that loss, Vince Lombardi promised his players that the Green Bay Packers would never lose another NFL Championship in which he coached. His prediction came to fruition the next year. In 1961, Lombardi secured his 1st NFL Championship when the Green bay Packers defeated the New York Giants 16-7. In 1962, the Green Bay packers finished 13-1 during the regular season and won their second consecutive NFL Championship over the same New York Giants in a close 16-7 contest. The Green Bay Packers had a 2-year hiatus from post-season play in 1963 and 1964, but the team returned with avengeance in 1965. Paul Hornung had his best season as an NFL player and Hornung led his team to another NFL Championship over the Cleveland Browns. The next year, the Green Bay Packers finished the regular season with a 12-2 record as Quarterback Bart Starr was named the NFL Most Valuable Player. That year, the Green Bay Packer defeated the Dallas Cowboys 34-27 in the NFL Championship game and then defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 in the First NFL-AFL Super Bowl. This was the 2nd time in 6 years where the Green Bay Packers had won back-to-back NFL Championships. In 1967, Vince Lombardi’s last year as Head Coach of the Green Bay Packers, the Green Bay Packers lost 4 times, but still won its third consecutive NFL Championship. One of the greatest NFL Championship games of all time – later named the Ice Bowl – saw Bart Starr score the winning touchdown on a quarterback sneak as the clock ran down in the 4th quarter. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Dallas Cowboys 21-17, and then went on to beat the Oakland Raiders 33-14 in the 2nd AFL-NFL Super Bowl Championship. No other NFL team has had as dominating a run as the Green Bay Packers of the 1960’s. Following Vince Lombardi’s death in 1970, the NFL named the Super Championship trophy the “Vince Lombardi Trophy” in honor of the NFL’s greatest head coach of all time.
Following 2 difficult decades in the 1970’s and 1980’s where the Green Bay Packers enjoyed little NFL success, the Green Bay Packers regained some of their pride during the 1990’s and early 2000’s. The Green Bay Packers brought in a new General Manager, Ron Wolf, who in turn hired new Head Coach Mike Holmgren. Under the offensive guidance of the great Quarterback Brett Favre and under the steady, confident play of defensive star Reggie White, the Green Bay Packers went 13 straight seasons without a losing record from 1992 through 2004. While the Green Bay Packers made the playoffs numerous times during that span, the Green Bay Packers only won the Super Bowl once – a 35-21 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI.
Current Green Bay Packers Quarterback Brett Favre has had one of the most successful NFL football careers in NFL history. Brett Favre holds the NFL record for most consecutive starts by a quarterback, currently 228 games (248 games if you count Green Bay Packers playoff games). Because of this record, Brett Favre is known for his durability and toughness throughout each and every NFL season. During his career, Brett Favre won 3 consecutive NFL Most Valuable Player Awards from 1995 through 1997. One of Brett Favre’s most memorable performances was in a Monday Night Football game against the Oakland Raiders on December 22, 2003. The day before, Brett Favre’s father died suddenly of a heart attack while driving his car near Kiln, Mississippi. Knowing that his father would have wanted to play in the game, Brett Favre played in front of the national audience and led the Green Bay Packers to a 41-7 victory over the Oakland Raiders. Brett Favre threw for 399 passing yards and 4 touchdowns. Once eligible for NFL Hall of Fame voting, Brett Favre will surely be a first ballot inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
After a disappointing 4-12 record during the 2005 NFL season, the Green Bay Packers fired Head Coach Mike Sherman and replaced him with the former offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers, Mike McCarthy (who had been the Packers Quarterbacks Coach in 1999). Despite a poor statistical year from Quarterback Brett Favre (18 touchdowns, 18 interceptions and a dismal QB rating of 72.7), the Packers finished with a .500 record at 8-8 and showed much consistency and improvement as the season wore on. The Green Bay Packers won the last 4 games of the season and Brett Favre decided to return for another NFL season in large part because of that late-season success and the confidence Favre had in the young team that he felt was one of the most talented teams he ever played with. Favre's optimism paid off big-time during the 2007-2008 NFL season. The Green Bay Packers won 10 of its first 11 games, and if not for a mid-season loss to the Dallas Cowboys when Brett favre was injured, would have had the best record in the NFC. Nonetheless, the Green Bay Packers finished with 13 wins and recorded a first week playoff bye. Brett Favre had one of his best statistical years - throwing for over 4,100 yards and 28 touchdowns with only 15 interceptions. In the Divisional Round of the playoffs, despite falling behind the Seattle Seahawks 14-0 because of 2 1st quarter fumbles by Ryan Grant, the Green Bay Packers rallied for a lopsided 42-20 victory. Brett Favre threw 3 touchdown passes and Ryan Grant redeemed himself with 3 rushing touchdowns and over 200 yards rushing. The Green Bay Packers were heavily favored in the NFC Championship against the New York Giants who had upset the Dallas Cowboys in Dallas. But the New York Giants were destined to advance to the Super Bowl, as the Giants became the first NFC team to win 3 straight road playoff games to advance to a Super Bowl berth. Although Favre threw for over 200 yards and 2 touchdowns in extremely adverse conditions, he also threw 2 interceptions, the last of which set up the Giants' game-winning field goal in overtime.
On March 4, 2008, Brett Favre announced his retirement from the NFL. The Aaron Rodgers reign will begin in earnest in 2008-9, although Brett Favre has hinted at making a return to the Packers or another NFL team if the organization does not want to bring back the "retired" quarterback.
