Foo Fighters Corner

Foo Fighters is an American rock and roll band whose music spans the genres of rock, alternative rock and post-grunge.  The Foo Fighters’ current members are:  Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel and Chris Shiflett.  The name “Foo Fighters” is a reference to the same term as it was used in World War II to refer to mysterious aerial phenomena.

Background

Foo Fighters was originally formed by Dave Grohl who used to play drums for the band Nirvana.  Nirvana was one of the most influential groups in alternative music history.  Tragically, Nirvana’s lead singer, Kurt Cobain, is thought to have committed suicide in April 1994.  Cobain was married to Courtney Love who is known as the lead singer for the defunct alternative rock band Hole.  Love acted in the movie The People v. Larry Flynt with Woody Harrelson and Ed Norton.  Courtney Love and Dave Grohl have been known to battle over the rights to Nirvana’s works.

While Grohl played drums for the band Nirvana, he wrote a series of his own songs which he eventually recorded onto an album called Pocketwatch under the pseudonym “Late!”  Following Cobain’s death, Grohl made his own studio album which eventually became the Foo Fighters debut album, Foo Fighters.  At the time the album was released, Grohl did not have a band to support the album.  Grohl soon recruited Nate Mendel, William Goldsmith and Pat Smear for his band.  The Foo Fighters performed its first tour in 1995 as an opening act for Mike Watt.  The Foo Fighters toured through the beginning of 1996 and then went to work on their second album, The Colour and the Shape.  While working on this album, Goldsmith decided to leave the band.

After Goldstein’s departure, Grohl recruited Taylor Hawkins to join the band.  Hawkins had been a drummer for Alanis Morissette.  In 1997, Pat Smear left the Foo Fighters.  Smear was replaced by another guitarist who then left and was replaced by Chris Shiflett.  Shiflett had previously performed with 22 Jacks and No Use for a Name.

The Foo Fighters have performed multiple times with the band Queen (including when Queen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame).  The Foo Fighters also appeared on David Letterman.  In 2004, the Foo Fighters attended several rallies to publicly support John Kerry’s presidential campaign.  In 2006, the Foo Fighters headlined a concert in Hyde Park in London where the band was joined by Motorhead, Queens of the Stone Age, Juliette and the Licks and Angels & Airwaves.

The Foo Fighters engendered controversy in 2000 when they began to publicly support an organization called Alive and Well which disputes the medical belief that there is a link between HIV and AIDS.  Eventually, the Foo Fighters became less vocal about their support of Alive and Well, but is thought to continue to support the organization today.  Foo Fighters also supports other causes including Democracy for America and Campus Project.
