Poinsettia Bowl Corner

The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl has been an annual college football bowl game since 2005.  The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl was endorsed by the organizers of the Holiday Bowl - a college football bowl game played since 1978.  The San Diego County Credit Union is the title sponsor for the bowl game, and as such, the name of the bowl game is the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.  The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl has always been played at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California.  Qualcomm Stadium – or “The Q” – was formerly known as San Diego Stadium from 1967 to 1980 and as Jack Murphy Stadium from 1980 to 1997.

Currently the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl has a tie-in with the Mountain West Conference.  The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl has also entered into an agreement with the US Naval Academy such that Navy will receive an automatic bid to the 2008, 2009 and 2010 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl games if Navy qualifies as an NCAA bowl-eligible team.  The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl had a similar agreement with Army for the 2006 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, but Army finished with a losing record and was not NCAA bowl-eligible.

The 2008 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl game will be played on December 23, 2008.  The 2008 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl game may feature 2 college football teams ranked in the top 20 entering the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.

The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl game will be televised on the ESPN Sports television network.

San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl History

In the inaugural San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl game on December 22, 2005, the US Naval Academy defeated Colorado State University of the Mountain West Conference 51-30 in a lopsided affair.  Navy’s #1 ranked rushing offense was just too much for Colorado State’s poor rushing defense, as the Midshipmen cruised to an easy victory.  Navy Running Back Reggie Campbell scored 2 of his bowl-tying record 5 touchdowns in the 2nd quarter.  Campbell finished the game with 116 rushing yards, 89 receiving yards and 85 return yards, and was named the game’s Offensive Most Valuable Player.  Navy’s Linebacker Tyler Tidwell was named the game’s Defensive Most Valuable Player.  In a losing effort, Colorado State Quarterback put up a valiant effort by completing over 75% of his passes for 381 passing yards and 3 touchdowns.  But his Herculean efforts were not enough to capture the inaugural San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl game for his Rams’ team.
