Mariah Carey is a pop and R&B singer and songwriter.  She is also a film actress and a record producer.  Carey is known for her vocal range, power and technical abilities.  She is considered one of the most successful artists of the 1990’s and she has claimed that much of her work is autobiographical.  Over the years, her musical style has been compared to that of Whitney Houston and Celine Dion.  Carey’s vocal range is phenomenal and her trademark is her ability to sing in the whistle register.

Background

Mariah Carey was born Mariah Carey on March 27, 1970 in Huntington, Long Island, New York.  Her mother was an opera singer and voice coach and her father was an aeronautical engineer.  She grew up in a multi-ethnic family (her mother is of Irish American descent and her father is of African American and Venezuelan descent).

Carey began singing at a very young age and was writing her own songs in her early teens.  She worked as a demo singer for local recording studios while in high school.  She graduated from Harborfields High School.  After school, Carey moved to New York City where she attended beauty school, held a number of part-time jobs and eventually became a back up singer for Brenda K. Starr.  Soon she met up with Tommy Mottola (her future husband) who was impressed with Carey’s voice and signed her to a recording contract.

In 1990, Carey released her debut album, Mariah Carey, for which she co-wrote all of the songs.  This album became a No. 1 hit.  Carey’s success has grown exponentially over the years.  Success continued throughout the 1990’s as is evidenced by the vast number of No. 1 albums and No. 1 singles from Mariah Carey.  In the early 2000’s, she took a break from public appearances for while.  She shot to success again around 2005 with the release of The Emancipation of Mimi.

Besides her singing career, Carey also works as a professional and successful actress.  Mariah Carey has appeared in the Hollywood films “The Bachelor” (1999) with Chris O’Donnell and Renee Zellweger, “Glitter” (2001), “WiseGirls” (2002), “Death of a Dynasty” (2003), “State Property 2” (2005) and “Tennessee” (2006).

Carey has written songs for Hollywood films such as “Men In Black” (1997) and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” (2000).  She performed with Whitney Houston on the soundtrack to “The Prince of Egypt” (1998) with the song “When You Believe.”

Music / Albums

Mariah Carey has released a number of studio albums including Mariah Carey (1990), Emotions (1991), Music Box (1993), Daydream (1995), Butterfly (1997), Rainbow (1999), Glitter (2001), Charmbracelet (2002) and The Emancipation of Mimi (2005).  Mariah Carey produced four No. 1 hits.  Emotions was not nearly as successful as the debut album, but the title track did reach No. 1.  Beginning with Emotions, Carey has co-produced almost all of her own material.  Music Box included influence from Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and became Carey’s most successful album worldwide.  Daydream included more influences from R&B and hip hop than previous albums.  Singles from Daydream album such as “Fantasy,” “One Sweet Day” and “Always Be My Baby” achieved widespread chart-topping success.  Butterfly continued the trend to the R&B and hip hop direction and included materials from Sean “Puffy” Combs and Missy Elliott.  The No. 1 single “Honey” appears on the album Butterfly.  Rainbow includes the No. 1 hits “Heartbreaker” (featuring Jay-Z) and “Thank God I Found You” (featuring 98 Degrees).  Glitter was one of Carey’s least popular and least successful albums.  Charmbracelet sales were a bit better, but Carey’s success really returned to prominence with the album The Emancipation of Mimi which included work from producers such as Kayne West and Jermaine Dupri.

Other albums from Mariah Carey include MTV Unplugged (1992), Merry Christmas (1994), #1’s (1998), Greatest Hits (2001), The Remixes (2003).  MTV Unplugged was Carey’s first widely-seen concert.  Merry Christmas includes a list of popular cover songs, with the most successful being Carey’s rendition of “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”

A few tributes to Mariah Carey have also been released called The String Quartet Tribute to Mariah Carey (2004), Butterfly Melodies: The Piano Tribute to Mariah Carey (2005) and Smooth Sax Tribute to Mariah Carey’s Greatest Hits (2005).

Besides her successful music and acting careers, Carey is involved in many social causes.  She donates money and time to organizations like the Fresh Air Fund, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the New York City Police Athletic League and the New York Presbyterian Hospital Cornell Medical Center’s obstetrics department.  She also performed on VHI’s “Divas Live” special in 1998 to support the Save the Music Foundation and participated in the 2001 fundraiser called “America: A Tribute to Heroes” following the attacks of September 11, 2001.  She has performed for Live 8 and participated in the “Shelter from the Storm” relief telethon for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
