History

The Chicago Blackhawks were originally founded in 1926 in Chicago, Illinois as the Chicago Black Hawks.  It wasn’t until 1986 that officials realized that the team name should have been the “Blackhawks” – 1 word not 2 words – as the official team name appeared on the franchise’s original NHL contract.  The Chicago Blackhawks won Stanley Cup titles in 1934, 1938 and 1961.    The Chicago Blackhawks are one of the Original Six teams in the NHL – along with the New York Rangers, the Boston Bruins, the Montreal Canadiens, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings.

The Chicago Blackhawks have retired the following players’ numbers: Glenn Hall’s #1; Bobby Hull’s #9; Denis Savard’s #18; Stan Mikita’s #21; Tony Esposito’s #35; and Wayne Gretzky’s #99 (retired league-wide by the NHL on February 6, 2000).  Keith Magnuson’s jersey number #3 has been out of circulation since his death in 2003.
