Canadiens Corner

The Montreal Canadiens are a professional hockey team in the National Hockey League (the NHL). The Montreal Canadiens play in the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference with four other teams: the Buffalo Sabres, the Boston Bruins, the Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs.  Canadiens tickets will be a hot item during the 2014-2015 NHL hockey schedule.

Montreal Canadiens 2014-2015 Outlook

The Habs had a strong 2013-14 season and some would argue that only an injury to Carey Price kept them from going to the final for the first time since 1993. They’ve kept the core intact, they’re younger, Price is healthy again, and it’s not like the East got all that much better. If you wanted to make the case that they belong in tomorrow/Thursday’s Cup contender division, I couldn’t blame you.

But all that said, they struggled to score goals last year — they were the lowest-scoring Eastern playoff team — and on paper the offense should be slightly worse. They were a bad possession team (see below), and their plus-11 goals differential doesn’t leave much margin for error. If even one Atlantic team made an unexpected push past them, they drop into the scary world of wild-card contention. That seems to be their floor, and I suppose there’s an outside chance they could even push the Bruins for the division title. They’re a good team; I just don’t see how they’re one of the seven or eight best in the league.

History

The Montreal Canadiens franchise was originally founded in 1909 and is still based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  The Montreal Canadiens are one of the Original Six teams in the NHL – along with the New York Rangers, the Boston Bruins, the Detroit Red Wings, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Chicago Blackhawks.  The Montreal Canadiens franchise has many nicknames, including Les Canadiens, Le Bleu-Blanc-et-Rouge, Le Tricolore, Les Glorieux, Les Habitants and Le Grand Club.  In the states, the Montreal Canadiens are most commonly referred to as the “Habs”.  The Montreal Canadiens have won a record 24 Stanley Cups, more than any other team in NHL history.  From a percentage analysis, the Montreal Canadiens are the 3rd most successful professional sports team of the major professional sports of the United States and Canada (MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL), trailing only the New York Yankees of the MLB and the Boston Celtics of the NBA.

The Montreal Canadiens won Stanley Cups in 1916 and 1924 and then back-to-back championships in 1930 and 1931.  The Montreal Canadiens won a record 5 straight Stanley Cups from 1956 through 1960.  The Montreal Canadiens then won 6 Stanley Cups during a 9-year stretch from 1965 through 1973.  The Montreal Canadiens ran off 4 straight Stanley Cups from 1976 through 1979 and finished off their record 24 Stanley Cups with titles in 1986 and 1993.  Shockingly, the Montreal Canadiens only lost 1 Stanley Cup series during their entire history, a 4 games to 2 series loss to the Calgary Flames during the 1989 Stanley Cup.  The Montreal Canadiens have endured little success since their last Stanley Cup title in 1993, winning only 3 playoff series during the last 14 years and never advancing further than the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

The Montreal Canadiens have retired the following players’ numbers:  Jacques Plante’s #1 (retired on October 7, 1975); Doug Harvey’s #2 (retired on October 26, 1985); Jean Beliveau’s #4 (retired on October 9, 1971); Bernard Geoffrion’s #5 (retired on March 11, 2006); Howie Morenz’s #7 (retired on November 2, 1937); Maurice Richard’s #9 (retired on October 6, 1960); Guy Lafleur’s #10 (retired on February 16, 1985); Dickie Moore’s #12 (retired on November 12, 2005); Yvan Cournoyer’s #12 (retired on November 12, 2005); Henri Richard’s #16 (retired on December 10, 1975); Serge Savard’s #18 (retired on November 18, 2006); Larry Robinson’s #19 (retired on November 19, 2007); Bob Gainey’s #23 (retired on February 23, 2008); Ken Dryden’s #29 (retired on January 29, 2007) and Wayne Gretzky’s #99 (retired league-wide by the NHL on February 6, 2000).

Montreal Canadiens TV/Radio

All Montreal Canadiens hockey games can be seen on Reseau des sports, a Canadien French language cable television specialty channel.  ESPN also has television rights to Montreal Canadiens games based on the popularity of the game. Tune into 800 CJAD (English) or CKAC 730 (French) on your AM dial to catch each Montreal Canadiens hockey game on the radio.

Bell Centre

The Montreal Canadiens play their home games in the Bell Centre.  The Bell Centre is located in downtown Montreal, Quebec and is known as Le Centre Bell in French.  The venue opened in March 1996 as the Molson Centre.  In 2002, Molson Inc, the owner of the Montreal Canadiens, sold the team and elected not to keep the naming rights on the venue.  Bell Canada officially acquired naming rights to the venue in September 2002 and the arena has been known as the Bell Centre ever since.  The Bell Centre holds a capacity of 21,273 devoted die-hard Montreal Canadiens fans.  It has played host to numerous memorable and historic NHL hockey games, concerts and other events, including the final 2 games of the 1996 World Cup of Hockey when the USA defeated Canada in both games to win the series 2 games to 1, and 2 pool games in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.  The Bell Centre is also slated to host the 2009 NHL All-Star Game and the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.  The Bell Centre has also hosted the WWE’s Survivor Series in 1997 and No Way Out in 2003.  The first ever UFC event in Canada occurred at the Bell Centre on April 19, 2008.  Canadian superstar Celine Dion has performed numerous sold shows at the Bell Centre.
