Senators Corner

The Ottawa Senators are a professional hockey team in the National Hockey League (the NHL). The Ottawa Senators play in the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference with four other teams: the Buffalo Sabres, the Montreal Canadiens, the Boston Bruins, and the Toronto Maple Leafs.  Senators tickets will be a hot item during the 2014-2015 NHL hockey schedule.

Ottawa Senators 2014-2015 Outlook

The Senators were a disappointment last year, never really contending for a playoff spot despite being a popular preseason pick in the Atlantic. That almost cost Paul MacLean his job; the former Jack Adams winner was rumored to be on the chopping block until a late-season win streak. On paper, they’ll be even worse this year without Spezza, so the playoffs would seem like a long shot.

That said, last year’s big problem was goaltending, as both Anderson and Lehner posted their worst save percentages in years. You’d have to think at least one guy bounces back this year, and MacLean has had all summer to figure out what went wrong defensively and make the necessary adjustments. They still have the league’s best offensive defenseman in Erik Karlsson, Kyle Turris looks ready to step into a full-time first-line center role, and Mika Zibanejad seems poised for a breakout. All that could be enough to at least keep them in the race, and owner Eugene Melnyk has indicated that there could be money available if they need a boost later in the season.

History

The Ottawa Senators franchise was originally founded in 1883.  The early franchise had a storied history winning 11 Stanley Cups from 1917 through 1934.  Ottawa real estate developer Bruce Firestone campaigned to have another NHL franchise awarded to the city, and in 1990 his campaigning paid off as the NHL issued a franchise to the city of Ottawa.  The new Ottawa Senators franchise began play during the 1992-1993 NHL season.  The Ottawa Senators finished last each of its first 4 seasons in the NHL, but it has been one of the more consistent teams the last 10 years.  The Ottawa Senators have reached post-season play in each of the last 10 NHL seasons.  The Ottawa Senators won the Presidents’ Trophy in 2003 and the Prince of Wales Trophy in 2007.  Following the 2006-2007 NHL season, the Ottawa Senators advanced to their first ever Stanley Cup Finals in 2007.

The Ottawa Senators have retired the following players’ numbers: Frank Finnigan’s #8 (retired on October 8, 1992); and Wayne Gretzky’s #99 (retired league-wide by the NHL on February 6, 2000).

It also hosts the Canadian University Men’s Basketball Championship (CIS). Originally The Palladium in January 1996, naming rights have been Corel Centre (1996-2006), and Scotiabank Place (2006-July 1, 2013). Apart from ice hockey, the arena hosts basketball, public skating, concerts and cultural events. It also features the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame, several restaurants, a fitness complex, and several catering businesses. Seating capacity is 19,153 and potentially a capacity of 20,500 of those wishing to stand.

The arena has held several notable ice hockey events. The arena has hosted two world championship ice hockey tournaments, the 2009 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships and the 2013 Women’s World Hockey Championships. Wayne Gretzky played his last NHL game on Canadian soil in 1999 at the arena.

In music-related events, the Juno Awards of 2003 and Juno Awards of 2012 Canadian national music awards were held at the arena. The arena has hosted concerts by many notable artists, including Paul McCartney, Genesis, Justin Bieber, The Eagles, Green Day, Kiss, Lady Gaga, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Prince, Rihanna, Roger Waters, Rush and Madonna who sold 15,000 tickets in a record 21 minutes becoming the fastest selling concert in Ottawa history.

Among other types of events, the arena held Billy Graham’s final Canadian Crusade in June 1998. Total attendance for the four-day crusade was over 100,000, with 28,000 attending during all-day Saturday, and 25,000 attending a Friday night concert by Jars of Clay.
